This weekend we received the sad message that honorable chairman Wim Opmeer of Jubal passed away. Wim was 74 years old.
He was just honored for his 65 years membership of Jubal of which he served as chairman for 27 years.
Under his stimulating leadership Jubal transformed end seventies from showband to a drum & bugle corps. At that time Drum Corps Holland was formed, with the first contest in Eemnes. Wim was one of the initiative takers and was a respected member of the board of DCH. This was also the time that “Anglo-Dutch” contests were organized with competitors as Gravesham; Basildon Blue Eagles; Mayflower; Beatrix and Jubal and many others.
Chairman Rob van Koningshoven, also former executive director of Drum Corps Holland, remembers Wim as a motivated chairman of Jubal, who also made a huge contribution to the development of DCH. “The cooperation with Wim was always positive and constructive. We shared some wonderful years together, with the visit of the Madison Scouts in 1988 as an absolute highlight”.
Wim struggled with his health the last couple of years and eventually passed away last Saturday.
We remember a great icon of our drum corps community and wishes his children, grandchildren, family and Jubal all the best with this great loss.
On behalf of Drum Corps Europe,
Rob van Koningshoven
